Four week workshop on How to Write and Sell Children's Books

 

Explore the creative and exciting world of children's books in this insightful seminar. Learn how to generate story ideas, develop plot and characters, and find an illustrator. Investigate ways to approach intimidating editors and agents. Discuss the nature of the publishing industry, how to research the market, and methods of presenting your work professionally.

Four Wednesdays, 7-9 PM, $195 per person.
The maximum enrollment  for this workshop is eight. It will be held at The Story Teller Bookstore, located at 30, Lafayette Circle in Lafayette, California.

  • Getting to know your goals and projects
  • The rewarding aspects of writing for children
  • The different genres of children's books
  • How to write a book (Part One) - writing for your passion and developing ideas
  • Writing exercises - beginning

Week Two:

  • Research the market
  • Where to submit your projects
  • Methods I used to sell my five children's books to major publishers
  • How to find and work with an agent
  • Finding your voice as a children's writer
  • How to write a book (Part Two) - character development and conflict
  • Writing exercises

Week Three:

  • Handling feedback and rejection from editors and agents
  • Working with the editor - when to rewrite and when not
  • Structuring the story
  • How to write a book (Part Three) - the ending
  • Writing exercises

Week Four:

  • What to do when you have been offered a contract
  • Final critique on your project with the group
  • How to find or form a supportive critique group
  • How to continue improving your writing after the workshop
